Understanding Challenges To Prevention, Diagnosis And Management Of CVDs In Young Indians

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a term that refers to a group of disorders that affect the heart and blood vessels, and includes coronary heart disease, stroke, and heart failure. CVD is the leading cause of death and disability in India, accounting for 27% of all deaths and 45% of deaths in the 40-69-year age group [1].

CVD can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or socio-economic status, but it poses a higher risk to Indians at an earlier age [2]. This makes it particularly important for our population to be aware of the risk factors, symptoms, and prevention strategies of CVD.

The recent report that we created after conducting a survey across the country (with patients & cardiologists) revealed gaps in public awareness about CVD, highlighting specific areas of concern for the general population, CVD patients, healthcare providers, and the entire health system.

Cardiovascular Survey Revelations

Approximately 50% of the respondents believe that sedentary behaviour is equally detrimental to heart health as smoking.
Approximately 60.5% of the respondents indicated they do not have a clear understanding about the difference in various cardiovascular diseases.

75% of the younger population with heart disease in tier 3 cities had pre-existing conditions such as diabetes or hypertension.

Startling Facts

A better understanding of CVD knowledge gaps allows for more effective communication aimed at raising public awareness and reducing the burden of CVD. This is critical because according to WHO 80% of premature heart attacks and strokes are preventable [3].

The report gives unique insights into CVD in India, revealing differences in awareness based on gender, age, and education, as well as regional perceptions of CVD risk, appropriate screening tests, and lots more.
